Coordinate Grids
Coordinate Grids
We use grids and wire-frame spheres to illustrate scale and location in the Atlas. In this section, spheres are used primarily for mapping coordinates on the night sky. [We also use spheres to represent physical objects, and those are discussed in “Models, Simulations, and Images.”]
Grids are planes demonstrating scale and distance in the Atlas. There are a series of nested grids centered on the Sun, accompanied by lines of constant radius. We also provide a grid that spans the entire Galaxy. Let's begin with some coordinate systems to help us locate objects in the sky.
