We use an image of the galaxy NGC 1232 to represent the Milky Way Galaxy in the Extragalactic Atlas. Since we cannot see the Galaxy from the outside, astronomers must make some assumptions about what it looks like. Many scientists agree that NGC 1232 is a good representation for the Milky Way. For more information on this data group, please see the Milky Way image section in the Milky Way Atlas section of this guide.
