Fora

Hello everyone! I'd like to suggest an expansion of this forum, mainly because I can think of many topics which do not fit into the three currently provided. Yes, I know you just launched these fora, but it's good to get a headstart!

1. It would be wonderful to have a general Q&A section. Dr. Tyson (hi, by the way, if you're reading this) has said numerous times that many people stop him on the street and ask him questions about the universe. If there were a place on the AMNH website where they could ask those questions to a general educated audience, everyone would benefit. I say this from personal experience: on the fora of the popular webcomic "xkcd," simple math questions ask by a member usually evolve into enriching and complex discussions rarely seen on the internet.

2. An events section would allow people to discuss upcoming AMNH events, along with programs sponsored by other organizations.

3. A suggestions section is always a good idea on any forum.

See you around!

Re: Fora

One of the reasons the forums, or fora, are limited to the Digital Universe is that we do not currently have sufficient resources to support forums for all of the activities in the planetarium. We are a small science department who participate in Museum-wide outreach activities, so to expand the forums we would need the cooperation of people in several departments across the Museum.

Let me address your points one-by-one:

1. We encourage those with questions about the night sky or the workings of the universe to e-mail us from our contact page. We answer these questions via direct e-mail. Someday, we may put these questions and answers on-line and allow our members to comment on them, but we do not think a Q & A is appropriate for a forum since the process of Q & A is not so much a discussion but a one-to-one communication.

2. I have discussed this with members of AMNH Public Programs and we are seeking ways to accommodate this.

3. We welcome suggestions via e-mail, since this is not so much a discussion but a request.

Thank you for your suggestions, I hope this helps.
